"Architecture starts when you carefully put two bricks together. There it begins.”
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Architect

At StoneWood Design we are thrilled to work on special projects because it allows us to be a part of bringing beautifully and well-appointed environments to members of our community.
During the past few years, StoneWood Design has been fortunate to work on several special design projects in Northern California. Here are three projects that we are especially proud to have had a hand in designing:
Clos du Lac View Gallery »
Located in the Sierra Foothills, Clos du Lac is an exclusive village that was inspired by old-world tradition and reminiscent of Southern France. Built complete with antique curbstones, a post office, an olive grove, wine-producing vineyards and custom, single-family villas, the Clos du Lac project was all about quality and craftsmanship.
StoneWood Design was responsible for designing and furnishing the interiors for three of the homes and their adjacent courtyards. The homes designed by the architect Henrik Bull of San Francisco, were detailed by StoneWood Design and each included imported French hardware, Rumford fireplaces and hand-carved keystones above the doors and windows.
Julia Morgan House View Gallery »
Built in the early 1920s for Charles M. Goethe, and his wife Mary, the “Julia Morgan House” is the only known Sacramento residence designed by the well-known California architect. The house located on T Street in downtown Sacramento, was carefully restored and renovated to comply with the family’s will that bequeathed the property to the California State University, Sacramento (CSUS).
Saving this home became a passion for Janice Stone Thomas, owner and principal designer at StoneWood Design because for years she had watched this architectural gem set idle. Ms. Thomas was instrumental in bringing together members of the community to work with CSUS to complete this project. Eventually, she was able to design the kitchen and butler’s pantry, as well as the upstairs landing.
Upon completion, this historical piece of residential architecture was shared with the Sacramento community, an accomplishment that StoneWood Design is very proud to have been a part of.
Sunset Magazine Idea House View Gallery »
In 2001, Janice Stone Thomas was chosen by the editors at Sunset Magazine to be the interior designer for the “Sunset Idea House.” In designing for this project, Ms. Thomas was asked by the editorial staff to use the William Bourn, Jr. home as her inspiration.
The Bourn home is a two-story country home that was built during the 1890’s, and was modeled after the noble estates of nineteenth century England. Today, the home is part of the Empire Mine Historical Park, located in Grass Valley, California and is known for its remarkable redwood interior, leaded glass windows and massive granite walls.
The “Sunset Idea House” was built in El Dorado Hills, California and was designed by architect Kevin O’Brien. StoneWood Design was responsible for all the interior finishes and fixtures.
Upon its completion, the house was open to the public and was part of 13-page spread in the magazine, which can be viewed by clicking here.
